Right Kind of Friend

Have you ever wondered if you are the right type of friend? A friend supports more thoroughly than a blood relative (Proverbs 17:17, NKJV). Godly friendship imbrues a heart suited for the will of God (James 2:23). People of like minds often find one another during times of duress and habitually find themselves forsaking what others would or could not (1 Samuel 18:1). We are commanded to love and be friends above reproach (Proverbs 18:24). Most people, even Christians, are more of an acquaintance; someone we are familiar with, but not one who will offer their life for ours when needed (John 15:13-14). Now, I am not implying we do not have true friends, what I am suggesting, it is not always according to the Gospel.

Unfortunately, earthly friendships are frequently bred from ulterior motives promoted by worldly values and not based on salvation (1 John 2:15-17). The right kind of friend seeks God’s face always. They also intend this pathway for those around them (1 Corinthians 11:1). True friends recognize a desire to be in Heaven for eternity but understand they cannot make it by themselves. YES, one must obtain Heaven for themselves (1 Corinthians 15:58, Phil 2:12, 2 Timothy 2:10, 2 Peter 1:5-10), but they realize it is a joint effort. This is because we are meant to suffer one another by how we live and support others (1 Corinthians 12:26). The right kind of friend DOES NOT hinder the will of God in the lives of those they influence. They often go against the grain (1 Samuel 14:45). Why? They love God more than men (Acts 5:29).

Here is the deal, are you willing to stand in Judgment and not be able to answer the question succinctly, “Why did you never mention Me to them?” (Luke 6:46). The right kind of friend always places their salvation squarely in front of every day, every place, and every situation. The right kind of friend understands there are souls at stake. The two at the greatest risk are mine and others. Think about it.

God Bless,

Archie R. Green
