Controversy is typically defined as a “dispute or argument in which people express very public, lengthy, heated, and often strongly opposing viewpoints” of a matter (Vocabulary.com, August 19, 2025). As we see from the text, Jesus was the epicenter of controversy and remains such, as seen in many religious circles today. In John 7, we see His brethren encouraging Him to show Himself (v 3-5). Some denied His Goodness and labeled Him a deceiver (v 12-13). Still others contributed to the hullabaloo, denigrating His knowledge of all things wise (v 15). Even more so, some desired to “stir the pot” by inciting the false narrative that He, Himself, had a demon (v 20). Amazing! It is never amazing that people hold grudges, fight back against what they do not understand, nor honor situations or people who possess greater talent, wisdom, or knowledge than others, unless they choose to. AND MOST OF US CHOOSE NOT TO, thus the controversy. John 7 reveals three classical manners in which we often see religious persons “hatin” on others. One, unbelief (v 5). Two, fear (v 13). Three, false doctrine. Sound familiar? If you were to take a poll, please contact Pew Research, you may receive data from their investigative instigating these same outcomes two thousand years after Christ walked the earth. Unfortunately, He is no longer physically on earth to settle these disputes and grievances among men.
Nevertheless, God has left us with everything we need to endure and overcome controversy in our Christian Walk. The Scriptures direct, “And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient” (2 Timothy 2:24). Our Father in Heaven CLEARLY states we MUST avoid quarrels which derive from unbelief, unsound doctrine, and fear of man! A Christian walks in a Christlike manner and thus does not engage in carnal warfare, which stages controversy among the Brethren. We MUST endeavor to overcome sinful behavior with the “footsteps” of Jesus. First, timing is everything (John 7:6). Jesus knew His Father was with Him and overcame the need to rush in as fools often do. Second, fear is NEVER a facet of discipleship…it undermines the soul (John 7:26). Finally, sound doctrine is not optional; it is a must! (John 7:16-18). Jesus WAS and ALWAYS WILL BE the Master of Controversy. What He is seeking are those who are willing to overturn controversy with Him for the saving and keeping of souls in Heaven. When you contemplate all things, there is no need, in Christ, for lengthy, public, nor heated disputes; we are supposed to be one (John 17:21). Where will you stand in all this? I pray on this side of peace, it’s how we defeat unnecessary arguments (2 Timothy 2:22-26).
Think on these things, and God Bless,
