“To whom then will you liken God, or what likeness compare with him?” (Isaiah 40:18)
Isaiah 40 calls us to enlarge our vision of God. This vision concerns more than religion; it concerns reality itself. Isaiah directs our attention to the God who created the cosmos, governs the affairs of humanity, and established the workings of time, space, and matter. As we behold God’s greatness, our faith in His wisdom, power, and care grows stronger.
Isaiah asks who has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand, marked off the heavens with a span, and weighed the mountains in scales. The oceans, mountains, and vast heavens reveal the greatness of God. He made them, understands them completely, and sustains them by His power. Nothing in creation exceeds His understanding or lies beyond His authority.
Isaiah also asks who instructed the LORD or taught Him knowledge. God needed no counselor when He created the heavens and the earth. He consulted no architects, engineers, philosophers, or scientists. His understanding is without limit, and His Spirit governs everything He has made.
Then Isaiah asks, “To whom then will you liken God?” There is no one like Him. Isaiah calls us to lift our eyes and consider the stars. God brings out their host by number and calls them all by name. Because of His great power, not one is missing.
The God who knows and sustains the countless stars has not forgotten His people. He knows our circumstances, understands our needs, and has the wisdom and power to care for us. He knows the end from the beginning and will accomplish what He has promised.
Knowing this changes how we face life’s problems. When illness, financial pressure, family struggles, or an uncertain future weigh upon us, we can see these difficulties in light of God’s greatness. Our problems may remain, and we may not understand how God will work through them, but we can trust the One who governs creation and keeps His promises.
Isaiah calls us to behold the majesty of God so that our faith may grow. The clearer our vision of Him becomes, the more confidently we can face life’s challenges, trusting that the God who rules the heavens also knows, loves, and cares for His people.
