A child’s learning should begin while young. At this juncture in life, our reception of new material is astounding. Additionally, what is learned first is often learned best. It is often referred to as the “law of primacy”. Assuming these things are correct, what should we strive to place in our children’s mental and spiritual repositories? A few things to consider. Firstly, it must be Biblical. Far too many Christians desire to follow the Far Eastern influence of mysticism and spirituality versus the safety found in God’s revealed will (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Peter records, “…long for the pure milk of the word, that by it you may grow in respect to salvation” (1 Peter 2:2, NKJV). Here the Holy Spirit encourages humanity to desire Bible knowledge as enriching nourishment for the soul.

Secondly, we should encourage our children frequently. Soundness is often compelled by reviewing information repeatedly for fluency. On at least three occasions God warns humanity to reframe from “adding and subtracting” from His will (Deuteronomy 12:32, Proverbs 30:5-6, Revelation 22:18-19). Thus, it is imperative to agree that the Scriptures are complete and without need of correction.

Lastly, teaching children comes with an example. What little impact on positive examples for our children if they have no pattern to first go by? Jesus demonstrates this with His followers (John 13:15). Paul incites Christians to follow his example, but only if he willingly surrenders to the Lord (1 Corinthians 11:1). In other words, children should be given every opportunity to learn, to learn while young, and to learn from an appropriate example. What will we learn about God today Mom and Dad? As it pertains to teaching our children, it really is up to you.

In Christ,

Archie R. Green
