The Significance of Temptation

The Significance of Temptation

Temptation is defined as “an enticement to sin, an invitation to disobey God’s will” (Encycpedia.com, July 14, 2025). Inherent to this definition is the understanding that one who allows himself or herself to become enticed to the point of disobedience towards God willingly distances himself or herself from good. This is the full significance of Satan being able to bring temptation into our lives. Temptation, entirely unchecked, will lead us to rebellion against God. One NT Elder stated, “But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death” (James 1:14-15, NKJV). The brother of Jesus understood the significance of sin and its detrimental effects when one is trying to obtain the eternal reward of Heaven. Brother Bobby Stafford maintains that Satan can accomplish these harmful effects due to the ability of the Devil in “twisting truth, sowing doubt, appealing to selfish desires (lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, pride of life), and targeting individuals during moments of weakness or vulnerability” (The church of Christ at Granby, MO). Temptation is a weapon in Satan’s arsenal, but also confusion (Genesis 3:1). He causes pain and afflictions (1 Peter 5:8-10). The Devil doles out afflictions (Revelation 12:10, attacks in the weakest moments (Matthew 4), and tries to isolate us from the Brethren where we all should maintain resolve and be strengthened (Psalm 23).

However, temptation also presents an opportunity to pursue what is worthy within the Kingdom. For example, without trials, it is impossible to learn to rely solely on God and His deliverance (Genesis 18:14). Without a constant barrage of earthly challenges, we would never be able to be tested unto “perfection” (James 1:4). Neither would we seek out to completion the efficacy in God’s word; for in this lies the answer to a successful triumph over the Devil and all that he may try to upend our pathway towards righteousness (Ephesians 6:11).

Will temptation always be an issue in this present world? Yes. But thanks be to God, He has given us all things needed to overcome and convey to others just how much God loves us, allowing us to be tempted, yet simultaneously giving us all things to overcome through His Son.

Think upon these things and God Bless,
