An Act of Faith

An Act of Faith

The term “institution” is often defined as the implementation or establishment of a law, practice, or custom (Online Dictionary, September 4, 2025). A history or historic act typically accompanies the understanding or naturalization of why this association came about. We see Jesus, our Lord, exemplifying this in the constitution of the Lord’s Supper, or communion, which we practice each first day of the week. He meant for us to undertake this as an act of faith. Jesus states, “When the hour had come, He sat down, and the twelve apostles with Him. Then He said to them, “With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer” (Luke 22:14-15, NKJV).

Notice how He draws attention to the symbolic and significant measures held within this act. First, Jesus reminds them that His mission to earth is temporal. Second, He typifies the passion each man should muster when taking this memorial supper in stating He held a “fervent desire” (NKJV). Next, He limits the emblems we partake of during the Supper to unleavened bread and the fruit of the vine. Jesus encapsulates each of these measures in the understanding that God has allowed and WILL CONTINUE to allow protection and provision for those who live their lives by faith (Romans 1:17). Then He states two eternal statements we often minimize today when observing this act of faith. One, Jesus states, “…do this in remembrance of Me” (Luke 22:19c). When the Church of Christ meets together on the first day of the week, we are to remind each other AND teach our children WHY we host this “memorial feast”. We need them to comprehend and learn for themselves that our God is a merciful, gracious, and wondrous God! (Psalm 111:4).

And finally, the most significant point to consider scurry into the up and coming next first day of the week, He lives! Yes, He died, BUT He promised that His temple could never be destroyed by the hand of Satan, nor mankind! (John 2:19) Amen! Jesus Himself demonstrated the greatest act of faith the world will ever witness. Innocent blood was shed so that we could have access to the Kingdom of mercy, so significantly undeserved (Colossians 1:12-14). Thus, many congregations proudly display the table, The Lord’s Table of Remembrance, so the young and the old should be reminded of the Good He Hath Done (Luke 22:19). Show your act of faith this week, by remembering the blood which set you free; it’s not just an act, but one of faith produced in a correct understanding in why Jesus had to die for you and me.

Think about these things and, God Bless,
