Giving Good Things

Giving Good Things

Have you ever wondered what pure perseverance looks like? What does it take to pursue those things in this life that make for a better life for myself and those around me? Persistence in giving good things predicates the reception of good things. Perseverance is often defined as “doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success” (Oxford Languages, April 28, 2025). This is not easily accomplished. How many of us have developed a “knack” for immediate gratification? And, when unable to receive comfort in such, immediately turn against what is designed to bring us eternal benefit.

From a spiritual standpoint, perseverance is the ability or desire to continue in one’s faith and commitment, even when facing difficulties or obstacles. This “struggle” assists in aligning several aspects of the Christian life. Firstly, it reaps perfection. The Bible states, “But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing” (James 1:4, NKJV).

Secondly, it builds endurance. Paul states that we should develop a longing to become steadfast in faith, knowing the Lord will provide no matter the opposition (1 Corinthians 15:58). Giving the good things of God never goes unnoticed, not unrewarded!

Thirdly, perseverance envelopes the concept of finality. I’m sure you and I have witnessed someone doing a singular good thing; quite a few people have bought into the “pay it forward” form of Christianity. But what good are we doing for the Kingdom of Heaven once we choose to produce fruit no longer? (Luke 13:6-9). God gives us a chance to give good things (Luke 13:8). No one could ever be MORE patient! (Hebrews 13:5). But we are earnestly warned that His mercies will end IF we falter in our efforts to receive the crown.

Lastly, shouldn’t giving good things be natural for the child of God? Consider how graciously God has exemplified the giving of good things through His one and only Son, Jesus. Knowing that one would betray Him, He still showed His steadfast endurance in His race until the bitter end (John 13:1). Jesus confirmed His righteousness by clearing His murderers from the Cross (Luke 23:34). What are you accomplishing regularly? In many ways, we must strive to persevere (do not forget about the fig tree) to save our souls.

Think about these things,
